If you’re planning a short trip to the Netherlands, this 48-hour Amsterdam itinerary will help you make the most of your time. Amsterdam completely surpassed my expectations! This might sound surprising since most people I know love this city, but a little fun fact—my husband didn’t enjoy it when he visited back in college, so expectations were low. Boy, was he wrong.
Amsterdam is picturesque, a foodie destination, rich in history, and overall just a fun place to be. From sitting along the canals (even in winter) enjoying a drink to exploring world-class museums, the city truly offers something for everyone.
We spent two jam-packed days in Amsterdam, and this is exactly what I would recommend for a first-time visit.

⸻
Take a Canal Cruise in Amsterdam
A canal tour in Amsterdam is an absolute must. While many tour operators offer hourly cruises throughout the day, we opted for a smaller company recommended by our hotel—Pure Boats—and it was an incredible experience.
We cruised through both narrow canals and larger waterways while enjoying blankets and drinks. Since we visited in winter, the boat was enclosed and heated, making it the perfect way to admire Amsterdam’s historic canal houses and architecture.

Visit the Van Gogh Museum
The Van Gogh Museum is one of the most popular museums in Amsterdam and well worth the visit. We chose the audio guide, which provided just the right amount of detail and storytelling to stay engaged while learning about Van Gogh’s life and artwork.
Tickets are timed, so I highly recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred time.

Tour the Anne Frank House
The Anne Frank House is a deeply moving experience and a must-visit in Amsterdam. The museum does an incredible job preserving the house while providing important historical context about Anne Frank’s life.
Tickets sell out quickly—I booked ours six weeks in advance, and I strongly recommend doing the same.

Visit the Heineken Experience
If you enjoy brewery tours, the Heineken Experience is a fun stop in Amsterdam. While it doesn’t quite compare to the Guinness Storehouse in Ireland, it’s still an entertaining and interactive experience.
You’ll learn about the brand’s history, take part in interactive exhibits, and of course, enjoy a drink at the end. It’s especially interesting to visit the birthplace of such a globally popular beer.

Walk Through the Red Light District
No trip to Amsterdam is complete without walking through the Red Light District—even if just out of curiosity. Photography is illegal, so I don’t have photos to share, but it’s one of the city’s most famous neighborhoods.
Keep in mind that the atmosphere changes significantly between day and night, as well as weekdays versus weekends, so your experience may vary.
Explore the Jordaan Neighborhood
One of the most charming areas in the city is the Jordaan neighborhood. We stayed at Mr. Jordaan Hotel, making it easy to explore on foot.
This area is filled with cozy cafés, bars, boutique shops, and some of the most picturesque streets and canals in Amsterdam. It quickly became one of my favorite neighborhoods to wander.

Experience Amsterdam’s Food Scene
Amsterdam has an incredible food and street food scene, with options ranging from viral TikTok spots to hidden local gems. Some classic Amsterdam street foods to try include:
• Stroopwafels
• Patat (Dutch fries)
• Poffertjes (mini pancakes)
Beyond traditional Dutch snacks, Amsterdam offers a diverse international food scene with cuisine from all over the world.

Is 48 Hours in Amsterdam Enough?
While there’s so much more to see and do, 48 hours in Amsterdam is enough to experience the highlights. With thoughtful planning, you can enjoy the city’s history, culture, food, and iconic sights without feeling rushed.
