How to Get Around Maui

Is renting a car in Maui worth it?

I personally would say this is a loaded question and the answer lies more in the type of trip you’re hoping to experience. I have visited Maui twice and have tried both options. If you are planning to book a luxury resort with all sorts of amenities to stay on property, I would not rent the car. Chances are the resort has dining options on site or within walking distance. In addition, excursions can be planned to include hotel pickup and drop-off. Therefore, it may be more cost effective to just Uber/Lyft those few times you want to leave the resort. Uber/Lyft is readily available on the island and eliminates any added stress of having to drive on vacation.

However, if you’re the adventurous type, looking to explore off the beat path, book the car! On my second visit to Maui, we did decide to rent a car as we were staying at a hotel with fewer amenities. Rental prices were reasonable for a compact vehicle, and it made it easy for us to go to the grocery store, go out for meals and drive to meeting spots for excursions. When comparing the options, renting a car was slightly less expensive and we personally loved having the freedom of the car. It really allows you to explore the island and move at your own pace. Most people tend to base themselves in the popular tourist towns but there is so much beyond those towns in the rural areas of Maui worth visiting. Be sure to rent in advance and note that rentals are conveniently located for pickup at the OGG airport.
