The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal, known for its dramatic coastal cliffs, golden beaches, and charming seaside towns. We based ourselves in Lagos for this trip, and it was the perfect choice. If you have more time, though, I’d definitely recommend exploring some of the other towns along the coast too!
Where to Stay: Casa Mãe

Let’s start with the perfect place to stay—Casa Mãe, located in old town Lagos. This boutique hotel felt like its own little oasis, just steps from shops, restaurants, and the historic center. Spread across a few beautifully restored buildings, the property includes on-site dining, a spa, two pools (a large one and a plunge pool), and even hosts special parties and entertainment on select nights.

It’s the kind of place where you could happily spend your entire holiday if you’re looking for a quiet getaway. For us, it was the ideal balance—we spent mornings at the beach and afternoons lounging by the pool before enjoying dinner back at the hotel. Their breakfast and dinners were honestly some of the best meals of our entire trip.

Beaches You Can’t Miss
My two favorite beaches in Lagos stood out for their pure “wow” factor—dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and golden sand.
• Praia do Camilo – Famous for its wooden staircase leading down to two small coves connected by a hidden tunnel, this beach is one of the most photographed in the Algarve. On our first visit, the water was crystal clear; this time, we found more seaweed, which just goes to show that conditions vary. Either way, the setting is breathtaking, and it’s perfect for a few hours of relaxation.

• Praia Dona Ana – Similar in nature but larger and perhaps even more beautiful. Also accessed by stairs, this beach had more sand and felt less crowded thanks to its designated sections. You can rent two chairs and an umbrella for €25, or spread out in the free areas. Bonus: there’s a beachfront restaurant if you want to grab lunch (though we didn’t try it ourselves).

Of course, these are just two of countless beaches in and around Lagos. Our hotel also recommended Meia Praia (best on calm, non-windy days) and Porto de Mós, both of which are still on our list for next time.
Lagos has a little bit of everything—stunning beaches, a charming old town, and incredible places to stay. For us, it struck the perfect balance between relaxation and exploration.
