Visiting a Fairytale Destination: Hallstatt

Hallstatt Austria is the closest thing to a fairytale destination that I’ve ever seen! This quaint alpine village is located on Lake Hallstatt in the Austrian Alps and is truly a gem! With growing popularity, many visitors come as a day trip to experience the wonderful attractions and rolling landscape.

I visited in November which was considered “off season” as not as many shops were open and the crowds were almost non-existent. I personally loved it as I wanted to visit to take in the enchanting views.

Top Things to Do and See in Hallstatt

Take in the amazing views of the village, Lake Hallstatt and the mountainous backdrop. I can’t imagine what it must be like living here because the views never got old! The most famous “view” or “photo spot” can be reached by walking through the entire village to the furthest spot and turning back to face the town. We started here to make sure we captured the iconic photo without being rushed. We continued to walk back through the village by climbing up to the church to look down from a higher viewpoint. Then we continued down into the main square for those beautiful pictures of the alpine houses. I can absolutely say all photos taken in Hallstatt are postcard worthy!

Get a birds eye view from the Hallstatt Skywalk. Take the Salzbergbahn cable car up to 838 meters to the “UNESCO World Heritage View” which has become very instagrammable. The cable ride is only a few minutes, very comfortable and it costs 22 euro per adult round trip. Salt mine tickets are also a combo option.

Visit the Salt Mine known as Salzwelten Hallstatt. I knew nothing about the history of Austria before visiting this beautiful country but salt mines were the livelihood to the country and Hallstatt is home to the oldest working Salt mine today. Many tours are available for the salt mine which normally average around 2-3 hours where you will learn the history, visit the mines of course, interact with the salt and ride the double lane miners slide.

Wander the cobblestone streets of the town! Many cute boutique shops are great for browsing or if shopping isn’t your thing, stop into a little cafe and grab a drink and bite to eat!
