When To Visit Maui

It is important to pick the right month for you when visiting the island depending upon several factors. First, let us note that the island does have different seasons, mostly distinguished by the amount of rain and slight temperature differences. In addition, the weather varies based on which coast of the island you are visiting.

Summer

The summer months are from mid-June through the beginning of September. This is the most popular time to visit because of the hot temperatures, clear skies, and least amount of rainfall. Temperatures for the island on average range from 70-86°F and average rain is less than 0.2 inches per month. This is a plus to those planning a trip to Maui…perfect weather. The drawbacks come in the high prices for accommodations and peak level crowds for those who may prefer a quiet vacation. The crowds did not deter us from planning our honeymoon during this season; I would recommend planning and booking ahead.

Fall/Spring

Spring months range from April to mid-June and Fall months from mid-September to mid-November. Weather tends to be ideal during these months, ranging from 67-84°F in the spring and 71-82°F in the Fall. Spring and fall are appealing not only for the near perfect temperatures but because the island is less crowded, and accommodations are more affordable. Of course, going into and coming out of winter there is always a greater chance for stray storms to come through as the winter months bring the most amount of precipitation. I visited in November for 10 days and only had one day of light on and off rain which I felt did not interfere with my planned activities. Perhaps if I was laying on the beach that day I would have felt otherwise.

Winter

Winter months occur from December through March. Depending on where home is for you the thought of winter can mean different things to us…as a New England girl, winter means below freezing temperatures and plenty of snow. This is not the case for Maui. Temperatures are cooler compared to the other seasons, but still range from 67-79°F. Winter on the island is more known for the several inches of rainfall. If you are looking to sunbathe, this is not the best time to visit. However, the winter rainfall brings a few of nature’s most beautiful elements to life. While exploring the seven sacred pools, the waterfalls are enhanced from the extra precipitation. And the more celebrated winter activity…whale watching! These majestic beauties migrate from Alaska to mate and birth their young. To get to see this up close and personal, is a once in a lifetime experience!
